Corkickle Brake
1st November 1986

Up to the 1980s the Cumbrian coastal mining town of Whitehaven had two cable worked inclines. These pictures show that at Corkickle where the "brake" was the only rail link between the large Marchon chemical plant at Kells with the main BR line at Corkickle. These pictures were taken on two visits during 1986, in February and during the last week of operation in November.

For more information about the fascinating and historic railways of Whitehaven see a recent publication by the Cumbrian Railways Association - details at http://tinyurl.com/lwqzsh
